Statistics from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Atlas 2013 show that the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in South African adults aged 20 – 79 years, has risen from 6.5% in 2011 to 8.27% in 2013. This implies that there are currently 2.6 million people living with diabetes in South Africa, but with only 1.4 million of those having been diagnosed. In addition to the problem of people living with undiagnosed diabetes, there are currently a further 2.6 million people living with impaired glucose tolerance (also referred to as “pre-diabetes” or intermediate hyperglycaemia).
