Who is at risk of developing diabetes?
It is important to know if you are at risk of developing diabetes, for the simple reason that the earlier you are diagnosed with diabetes, the earlier you will be put on treatment to control your blood glucose levels and reduce your risk of diabetes related complications.
There are certain “risk factors” that may indicate if you are at risk of developing diabetes.
Check the list below. If you have 1 or more risk factors you need to see your doctor and ask him to do a diabetes screening test.
Risk Factors For Diabetes:
If you are an adult (person > age 20yrs) and are overweight or obese (Body Mass Index (BMI) >25kg/m2), and if you answer YES to 1 or more of the questions below – you are at risk of developing diabetes. Please consult with your doctor for further investigations
- Are you physically inactive?
- Do you have high blood pressure (BP >140/90mmHG)?
- Do you have a family history of diabetes i.e. mother / father / brother / sister?
- Have you ever had polycystic ovarian syndrome (females)?
- Do you have an abnormal cholesterol levels (HDL <0.9mmol/l)?
- Do you have a history of cardiovascular disease?
- Do you have a history of Gestational Diabetes; or have you had a baby larger than 4kg at birth?
- Have you ever been diagnosed with Impaired Glucose Tolerance or Impaired Fasting Glucose?
